Endocrinologist Update

I saw the endocrinologist yesterday, and although I feel a little bit better informed, i don’t really know anything new yet. I do feel good about knowing that something is being done now. I’m having some scans done today on my parathyroids, involving radioactive fluids being injected into my veins – I hope I mutate into something cool! Also having some other tests run next week. Basically the doc is trying to rule out all possibilities.

I’m fairly certain that the scan today will show that at least one of my parathyroids is enlarged – which will mean surgery. There are also other problems however, which may point to the deeper issue of why all this is happening. One possibility is Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN for short) which is a nasty genetic disorder that causes benign growths on all your endocrine glands, seemingly at random. There is no cure, there is treatment, for the various problems it can cause. It’s not necessarily life threatening, nor life shortening, but it is a pain in the ass, for the rest of your life.

Don’t panic yet (I’m telling myself), we don’t know anything for sure. It IS a genetic disorder, and I don’t know of anyone else in my family that has had anything like it. Although, I don’t know as much about my dad’s side of the family.

I guess I’ve gone to far to turn back now on the health blog thing – I’ll keep ya’ll informed. When I know more, you’ll know soon after. If I haven’t said this before, I should have. Thanks for caring – it helps to know that there are people out there that do.

  1. I have to be honest. After I got over being freaked out, this made me laugh just a little, if taken out of context. Thought you might need a little laugh, seeing it from my warped perspective:

MEN…is a nasty genetic disorder…. There is no cure, there is treatment, for the various problems it can cause.

  2. Please, PLEASE let us know if you start to develop any, er, unusual powers. I hope it’s not as lame as when Maggie from Family Guy could only grow long fingernails.

  3. Ha Ha very funny D. Okay it made me laugh a little bit.
Bob – I will let know know, the only thing I’ve noticed is more hair growing on the few parts of my body that aren’t covered in it, but that could be just an age thing. Although I did seem to have a little more control over how quickly it grew…. hmm…..
