It’s official. I’m going to have my throat slit open in three weeks, and have parts of me removed. Possible all of my thyroid and even most of my parathyroid, but the surgeon won’t know for sure until he has me open. I hope he doesn’t ask my opinion at that point… He’s going to slice at the same spot that the previous surgeon opened my up, so that I don’t have two scars. He’s really nice, and does about 250 of these operations a year – more than anyone else in the Kansas City area. I feel good about it, as good as I can anyway, the thought of having my throat sliced open again, of the possibility of losing my voice again, doesn’t thrill me. But I need to do it, I will feel much better after it’s done, and we’ll know more about what’s going on with my body.

I’ll be under the knife for about an hour and a half and spend the night in the hospital. I’m not sure really how long I will be off work, I guess it mostly depends on how I feel, although they don’t want me to drive for a week. The reason? They don’t me to have to look quickly in one direction or the other and rip stitches out. Ick/Ouch!

Oh yeah! Three days! I’ll be 35 in three days! One quarter of my life will be over! Yes that’s what I said, one quarter! You do the math!

  1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! You shouldn’t have had me do math, man. You remember that Algebra class we took together? Solid C. I’m sorry I didn’t get to call you on the day. Hope it was fantastic.

  2. it will always give you the opportunity to drop into conversation the occasional mention of “like the second time i had my throat slit”… all very mysterious and james bond-like. and then quickly say “but i can’t really talk about that.”

    happy birthday too!

  3. Hey zipperneck! When’s your surgery? Is it this week? Can they just install a zipper for easy access? I’m thinking of you and wishing you well. Let me know how you are. Miss you.
